Midwifery

Midwifery services at Alana are evidence based, patient centred and encompass everything from mental health screening and birth preparation to fetal heart monitoring and breastfeeding support. Incorporating midwifery support and education into your antenatal care you will receive the extensive benefits available both antenatally and postnatally.

Initial Antenatal Consultation

Your Alana midwife will normally see you for the first time at around 14 weeks gestation.  They will introduce themselves and ask about your medical, gynaecological and obstetric history (if applicable).  They may inquire about your lifestyle, mental health and support system to obtain a holistic understanding of your well-bearing, so all care can be given and support measures put in place if required.  Guidance is given on nutrition, exercise and lifestyle for a healthy pregnancy.

Your midwife will discuss what to expect regarding routine prenatal tests and screenings that are carried out at different stages of your pregnancy.  This includes pathology and vaccinations/Anti-D.

Discussion of Expectation

You can discuss with your Alana midwife about your preferences for your pregnancy, birth and postpartum.  Do you have in a birth plan?

You can discuss any worries or concerns that you may have confidentially and with support.  Contact with your midwife via text is also available.

Private or small group Antenatal Classes are available and are best booked in for about 28 weeks gestation.  This comprehensive class runs for 3 hours.  Cost:

  • Private class – $300.00
  • Group class – $250.00

Physical Examination

Depending on where you are in your pregnancy, your Alana Midwife may conduct a physical examination with your consent.  This could include blood pressure, baby fetal heart rate, with Doppler or scanner.  Your midwife will palpate your tummy to check the position of the baby.

Breast examination may be performed to discuss antenatal colostrum collection and to flag antenatally any possible issues with breast feeding.

If required, at 28 weeks you can receive your pertussis and flu vaccination at Alana under the National Immunisation Program.

Postnatal Support

You may visit your Alana Midwife in the first week after leaving hospital to check how you are feeling and discuss any parenting challenges.

The baby can be weighed and breast feeding issues addressed.

Further support measures/visits can be put in place if required.

Home visits with a lactation or sleep and settling specialist can be arranged and Tresillian support can be organised should you be having any settling issues.
