VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Caesarean): Facts, Fears & Your Rights

Pregnancy Dr Minke Burke Director
If you’ve had a previous caesarean, you may be wondering... Can I have a vaginal birth next time? Is it safe? Will I be supported?

Yes, You Can Have a Say in Your Birth Plan

For women who’ve previously had a caesarean section, planning a subsequent birth often comes with uncertainty—and many questions. Can I have a vaginal birth next time? Is it safe? Will I be supported? Vaginal Birth After Caesarean (VBAC) is a safe and evidence-based option for many women, yet myths, fear, and hospital policies, even public opinion, can sometimes overshadow the facts.

Understanding VBAC: What the Evidence Says

For women with a single prior caesarean and no contraindications, VBAC is successful in about 60–80% of cases. It’s associated with fewer complications, a quicker recovery, and a lower chance of complications in future pregnancies compared to repeat caesareans. Careful screening and monitoring are important, but VBAC is a clinically supported option—not a risky outlier.

Common Concerns and Misconceptions

  • “Once a caesarean, always a caesarean” is outdated. Many women are excellent candidates for VBAC.
  • Uterine rupture is the most serious risk, but it’s rare (about 0.5–1%) and most often detected early with proper care.
  • Hospital or clinician reluctance often reflects policy, not always personal safety. Asking for a second opinion or referral can help.
